Steven's Bio
Steven D. Smallwood is the founder of Leader Roots, a leadership development company focused on the human side of leadership. A Tulsa, Oklahoma native and Retired Navy Veteran, Steven served 20 years in the Navy, where he built a strong foundation in leadership through military training and real-world experience.
He went on to spend 25 years at American Airlines, leading aircraft maintenance teams before becoming a Human Resources Business Partner. In this role, he focused on the human side of technical operations, supporting teams and guiding leaders through personal and professional dynamics, including the US Airways merger and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Steven empowers leaders across industries by emphasizing the power of effective communication, empathy, and the strength of leading with vulnerability. Through his coaching, he helps frontline leaders shift their mindset to reduce stress, build confidence, and lead more effectively.
